Achievement Gap
Access to quality, affordable, safe and culturally inclusive education is a top priority issue for the Commission on Asian Pacific American Affairs.
In 2008, the Washington State Legislature funded two separate studies focusing on the achievement gap of Asian American and Pacific Islander students in the State’s public schools. Studies on African Americans, American Indian/ Alaskan Native and Latino students were also undertaken in this period as part of a larger effort of the State to close Washington’s achievement gap.
These reports produced a comprehensive plan for closing the achievement gap pursuant to goals under the Federal No Child Left Behind act for all groups of students to meet academic standards by 2014 and an identification of performance measures to monitor adequate yearly progress. A final report was submitted on December 30, 2008, to the Governor, the Superintendent of Public Instruction, the State Board of Education, the P-20 council, the Basic Education Finance Task Force, and the Education Committees of the Legislature.
On May 12, 2009, Governor Chris Gregoire signed Senate Bill 5973, which incorporates recommendations for closing the achievement gap identified in this and other reports.
